What is the Difference Between Raw Milk and Organic Milk?
A lot of people have become more health conscious lately, and one of the things many have started to look into is raw milk. Yes that is milk straight from the cow or goat, not pasteurized, not homogenized.
However, there seems to be some confusion over the difference in raw and organic milk, with some folks thinking when they pick up organic milk it’s very healthy. Frankly, every time I’ve bought organic milk in the past it has been absolutely tasteless, and I notice it always says it is “ultra pasteurized.” Anyway, I stopped buying the organic stuff in the stores about 6 or 7 months ago when I found a local farm that sold raw milk. And since then I have bought my own cow.
Well more on that later, for now we are discussing the differences in these two types of milk. Regular pasteurized and homogenized milk that you can buy in any grocery store can also be organic. If it says so on the carton, then it MIGHT be organic. I say “might” because I have heard reports recently about one of the organic milk farms that refuses to follow the rules (like how the cows are fed, etc) and so even though it says it on the carton, it isn’t really. But customers are paying the price anyway. I’m going to look into that more and report back in another post, but I’m not going to be surprised to find out this is true.
Okay so raw milk is milk that is basically straight from the cow or goat. I personally prefer cow milk. This is not heated (pasteurized), not homogenized (fat globules broken up), and it is absolutely delicious. We do not feed our cow any grain, she is entirely grass fed, and she gets healthy minerals because Florida lacks these in the soil. No pesticides are ever used. If you’re going to find someone to buy raw milk from, this is what you need to look for. No grain or very little grain, and mostly grass fed healthy cows will give you some wonderful tasty milk with thick cream rising to the top that you can skim off for your coffee if you wish. Or you can make some butter.
Well it is milking time so I’ll be back to talk more about the subject later.
